THE BUSH FAMILY
INTRODUCTION.
I wish that I might have known both Asahel II and
his son, Asahel III. One died three years before I was born; the other
I just don't remember, although he may have been there when I visited Bush
House with my parents.
Estelle, the eldest, was married
and away from the family except for visits, I do remember her quite well
from several trips she made to California, when she invited us to her hotel.
So, really, Sally and Eugenia were the two I felt
close to of all the Bush family, especially Sally.
In the early 1890s Mr. Bush took an instant liking
to my father, who remained their family physician until 1922, when we moved
to California. As such, he was friend and confidant as well.
My father served on the staff of three of Oregon's
governors, and helped steer the course of medical practice, and set high
medical standards in the state of Oregon.
Governors Gear and Lord dined frequently at Bush
House, and my parents were often included on these occasions. Mama remembered
well those delicious meals, served on the finest china, with crystal and
silver, and always candles, and a lovely bouquet, arranged by Sally, in
the center of the exquisite white tablecloth.
By the time I was four I was allowed to be present
at table, Aunt Sally had given me a small-size set of fork, knife, spoon
and "pusher." I remember well how I strove to use them properly!
