Debra's music reflects her multifaceted interests and musical backgrounds.
Stylistically, it is difficult to "pigeonhole." She's a genre-buster.
Her music might be called an eclectic mix of blues, rock, funk, folk and jazz,
but Debra likes to call it "Blues Nouveau". Basically, if you love music,
there's bound to be something on her CD that will grab you. It's got something
for everyone.
Debra grew up, attended schools in Southwest Michigan, and college in Michigan
and Wisconsin. She has been a musician since the age of 8, when she began
playing guitar, singing and writing songs. Her family is very musical,
with Mom as a classical pianist, Dad playing guitar, and her Brother playing
the…. stereo. When she was first starting in the band at school, she was set
on playing the drums. However, the band director wouldn't let girls play
drums, so Debra chose trumpet, and integrated her rhythmic impulses into her
guitar playing and songwriting. Debra explores many on styles on this
album, and invites you to join her for a listen.
"I love all kinds of music. I am fascinated by the alchemy of sound,
rhythm, vibration, and silence. I actually think music is as much about
the spaces in between the notes, as the notes themselves. You'll notice
that the spatial relationships in my music are a
syncopated and harmonic blending of a main line (melody) and counterparts to
create perfect balance and alchemy. Playing with my band is really great,
because when we're in this groove, the energy gets really exponential.
Lyrically, the music is fueled by an emotional message or experience - usually
love. This is my wish for the people of the world too; that we might realize
our differences are merely opportunity for perfect compliment in an atmosphere
of tolerance and love. As in music, and with people, each part would not
exist in its place without the other. I hope that my music will take you
on a journey, and that you'll find pieces that will touch your life, or parallel
your experiences. I named my music company "Share The Ride" for this reason.
Plug in, enjoy, feel, and let's share a musical slice for a while." D.F.
