Matthew Greif has performed in France, Spain, and throughout the United States.
His awards include the Andres Segovia Award presented at the University of Southern
California, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and first place
in the American String Teachers Association California Guitar competition.
Matthew's debut recording, Permanent Transition, on Metro Records features
the world premieres of internationally-influenced classical pieces as well as
duo improvisations with Andrew York of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and guitarist/composer
Dusan Bogdanovic of the Falla Guitar Trio. After a year of study at Northwestern
University, Matthew earned his Master and Bachelor of Music degrees
at U.S.C., where he studied with James Smith and William Kanengiser. Matthew
has also studied in master classes with David Russell, Christopher Parkening,
Manuel Barrueco, and many others. He spent two summers studying in Spain
with José Tomás and Pepe Romero. Besides guitar, he also
studied the lute with James Tyler at U.S.C.
Matthew teaches guitar at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo
and at Ventura College.
