STRTLG, (pronounced straightleg), the former rhythm section for Creature
Feature from 1989 to 1994 (Greg) & 1997 (Jef) has just released its debut
album, entitled "Road to Eudaemonia". (Eudaemonia- "happiness; blessed
with good fortune; specif., in Aristotle's philosophy, happiness, the main universal
goal, derived from a life of activity governed by reason.) Drummer Jef Kirchmaier
and his bass playing brother Greg began writing songs together several
years ago, not knowing that they would be in Robinson Eikenberry's studio
in February of 1998 recording a significant piece of local musical history.
In the interest of solidarity, perhaps, Jef and Greg performed everything on
the album. In Creature Feature, they for the most part played Giancarlo's songs,
adding their own ideas periodically, but this time they wrote everything. With
the indispensable help of Robinson, this challenging project came out just as
it should have. When the recording was done, it was a matter of saving up the
money needed and getting the artwork designed. The money took a while, but Michael
Mariani stepped up and took on the artwork task. Under the direction of
STRTLG, he went to work and did a great job with everything. It looks just as
they had hoped.
Road is a great work. Read along with the lyrics as you listen. Listen with
the lights off. You've got to get into it. It is definitely not a pop album,
but one that beckons you to listen and understand the deep underlying theme.
Along the same lines as Pink Floyd's The Wall and Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime,
Road to Eudaemonia tells a story. Presented from the point of view of the story's
main character Mr. Jenkins, it covers just a portion of his life as a trucker.
This may not sound exciting now, but it will make you think twice as you pass
those big rigs in the future.
