"STILL LIFE.. is a thoroughly satisfying experience. Your
music should be heard by a lot of people. They should learn how to spell your
name properly. Broad social exposure of this new work would help us all to cop
a good feel. It has a flawless musical design, a sure-footed poetic cautious
optimism. "

JON WILCOX, a Santa Barbara native, first gained national recognition
in folk music circles in the 1970s, touring widely and recording traditional-flavored
singer-songwriter albums for the Folk-Legacy and Sierra/Briar labels. A highly
regarded veteran of the folk and "almost bluegrass" scene, he has founded -
and recorded several CDs with - two remarkable bands, MARLEY'S
GHOST (1986- ) and the RINCON RAMBLERS
(1994- ), both of which he still performs with regularly, both known for rich
vocal harmonies, infectious rhythms and a wide variety of musical styles.
His more recent solo work reflects these same diverse influences, blending
Ralph Stanley and Smokey Robinson with RL Stevenson, Leonard
Cohen and Joseph Campbell. Accompanying himself inimitably on guitar,
mandolin and Irish bouzouki, he sings both his clever and compelling originals
and his reverent renderings of traditional Scottish and Irish fare, Appalachian
gospel and the occasional Dylan, Van Morrison or Merle Haggard
song in a seasoned tenor with a rough-edged delicacy, a restrained abandon.
STILL LIFE, his first solo CD, featuring
Sally Van Meter, Nina Gerber, Tom Rozum and Michael Shrieve, among
others, was released by Sage Arts.
“JON WILCOX is a rare song stylist whose tastes are eclectic,
sometimes eccentric, but always combine an avid interest in our musical heritage
with a contemporary perspective."
